Stumbling across this nearly century-old quote from PT Barnum that still rings true today inspired me to search for more quotes about the unexpected.

Every man should make his son or daughter learn some useful trade or profession, so that in these days of changing fortunes of being rich today and poor tomorrow they may have something tangible to fall back upon. This provision might save many persons from misery, who by some unexpected turn of fortune have lost all their means.

~ P.T. Barnum (1920)

Nearly all the best things that came to me in life have been unexpected, unplanned by me.

~ Carl Sandburg (1950’s, approximately)

We have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.

~ Paulo Cohelo (2016)

Having a goal is one of my core values, but I’m also keenly aware that you can’t permit the pursuit of a goal to blind you to the opportunities that spring up along the way. Some will be dead-ends that distract you from your purpose, but some will be astonishing journeys that you may miss if you don’t allow for the unexpected.
