My name is Michael Devers and I am a junkie

They say you can tell a lot about a person by comparing the size of their television to the size of their library. Our family owns two big screens, one upstairs and one downstairs. However, even the if put together, the big screens are dwarfed by the size of our library. Our house currently holds six different six foot tall bookshelves – all packed to capacity – and we could use two more, but we’ve run out of places to put them.

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a book junkie. My wife is also. For Valentine’s Day this year we scheduled a perfect date – sushi in San Antonio and then a trip to the book store. I picked up two new books (I’ve already finished one of them – Sex Money KISS by Gene Simmons), and Clair bought a few magazines as well as a set of owl book stops.

At any given time, I’m reading a few different books. Currently that includes two different books on the consulting business (along with listening to an audio book on the subject while in the car), and one fiction book – Diane Fanning’s Punish the Deed. Lastly, I always have a book on my Kindle for iPhone (just finished the Richest Man in Babylon and now on Thick Face, Black Heart) to make sure that I am never stuck anywhere without something to read.

Once I finish with any of the titles in my current round of reading, I have a small section of books ready to take its place.

Next up shelf

I call this my “next up” shelf.

The nice thing about being a book junkie is that I have little fear of being ambushed by my loved ones with a book intervention. Even if Clair has threatened a couple of times.

    I’m over it. If you can’t beat ‘em . . .

Currently I am reading 6 books:
    1. Stephen King – On Writing (kind of perpetually reading this)
    2. She’s come undone – Wally Lamb (read this yeasr ago when it forst came out and I wanted to re-read as I am considering writing a semi-autobiographical/semi-fiction book that is a kin).
    3. Cesar Millan – Be The Pack Leader (new puppy)
    4. Franny and Zoey – JD Salinger (Wes Anderson inspired me to read Salinger/Carra send me two books for Christmas)
    5. Understanding Exposure – Bryan Peterson (I aspire)
    6. Reflections on my Life and Writings – Paul Brunton (When Judy and Ray Hubbard found out that after we sold LSM, I was going to write, Ray sent this book over for me. It’s a sporatical read).

Two of my new favorite things? Bookends & Bookmarks (made by my kids are the best).

It’s people like you, and the other avid readers of the world, that give me hope that the human race isn’t doomed to illiteracy. I love seeing people with a ton of books and who love to read, and it baffles me to hear statistics that claim that a large percentage of people haven’t read a book in the last year, two years, five years. I can’t imagine going a week without reading a book, let alone a whole year!

So from one book junkie to another, I salute you!
